Programme for 'They Came to the City' by J.B. Priestley at the Unity Theatre, Hove (Post 1936)The Brighton Unity Theatre in York Road, Hove, Sussex was born in 1936 out of a desire of the people again to participate in the living theatre'.

From time immemorial, beginning with the dramatic activities of ancient Greek culture, and the Nativity Plays here in Britain, theatre has belonged to the people-to express their views on what concerned them most, and to use in putting forward controversial ideas to a wide and interested public. In short, ,theatre' has, in the past, played a strong part in the social, political and cultural development of people widely separated by race, creed and colour.

Fear that the living theatre was being taken out of their hands by profit-seeking sponsors playing down their cultural aspirations, inspired the founders of 'Unity' to create a Theatre of the people, and for the people, in which these developments took precedence over 'Box Office'.

We, as a branch of Unity Theatre National Society, will endeavour to give you from time to time, plays worth acting, written and acted especially for you, and we hope to deserve your regular support for this, the People's Theatre'.
