The Palace Theatre was situated off Market Street, Heckmondwike. It was later converted for Cinema use as the Palace Cinema, and then Bingo.

Neil Sean says:- 'Alan Scott appeared there in the late 50’s when the manager was a Mr Don Haigh. Alan was booked as a compare / comedian for a show that also featured the wonderful Shirley Bassey who was not quite the big star at this stage of her career. Alan tells me “It was a lovely plush theatre inside, red velvet, and well looked after... It was also at that time being used as the local cinema." Alan adds, “Don the manager was a clever man really as he hosted many different things including kids clubs and Saturday morning cinema... They also used to get many of the turns who were appearing around and about at the Empire Leeds, Bradford Alhambra and such like... Many used to come over to rehearse when the theatre was empty. It was used after it closed down in the early 60’s as a bingo hall right up until a few years ago. Its a shame that no one has taken it on as the people of this hamlet really now do to have go to Leeds or Bradford for any live theatre.'" Alan also recalls people like Tommy Cooper, Winfred Atwell and many various others appearing at the venue. It really does have a history but like so many will no doubt be used for carpet storage in the end. - Neil Sean.
