Oxford Theatres

The Hippodrome Theatre opened in 1902 and was situated on Cowley Road, Oxford. It was formally known as the East Oxford Theatre, and also as the Empire Music Hall and was converted in 1902 by A. Ward from a hall dating originally from 1890.

The new Theatre had a pitched roof over the auditorium and a fly tower, however the earlier building was completely gutted internally. Large windows were inserted into its outside walls and the Cowley road frontage was changed to a domestic appearance by fitting bay windows and gables. The Theatre's entrance was also altered, being situated between shops with flats above.

The Hippodrome Theatre was demolished in 1982.
