A Chronological List of Productions at the Theatre Royal, Bath 1863-1899

Compiled by Christine M. Bayliss 2019

Introduction - 1863 - 1864 - 1865 - 1866 - 1867 - 1868 - 1869 - 1870 - 1871 - 1872 - 1873 - 1874 - 1875 - 1876 - 1877 - 1878 - 1879 - 1880 - 1881 - 1882 - 1883 - 1884 - 1885 - 1886 - 1887 - 1888 - 1889 - 1890 - 1891 - 1892 - 1893 - 1894 - 1895 - 1896 - 1897 - 1898 - 1899

See Also: Theatre Royal, Bath Productions from 1805 to 1862 - 1863 to 1899 - 1900 to 1938 - 1939 to 1981 - 1982 to 2019

The starting date for this list relates to the disastrous fire at the Theatre Royal, Bath, on Good Friday 18 April 1862, which reduced the theatre to a shell. The theatre was speedily rebuilt and opened on 4 March 1863. This seemed to be a logical starting point rather than beginning at 1850.

As with the previous list the information contained here has mostly been compiled from advertisements and reviews in The Bath Chronicle, The Bath Journal and The Bath and Cheltenham Gazette available at Bath City Archives. Many runs of the newspapers are incomplete, having pages missing or unreadable sections. Where possible programmes and playbills, also now held at Bath City Archives, have been checked. A note of caution here as advertisements and playbills do not always indicate what actually appeared on the stage – this sometimes related to an accident or the illness of an actor. Additionally there was a tendency, for financial reasons, to change advertised programmes in favour of productions that had done well a day or two before. This is often only revealed in the reviews. It was usual for the theatre to close on Ash Wednesday as well as the week which included Good Friday although there were frequently performances in later years on the Saturday. Performances, usually, were as normal from Easter Monday onwards. The end of the season was around mid-May, but frequently there were single performances between then and the autumn season by visiting companies and local amateurs. Maintenance work was often carried out at this time as well. Matinees tended to be on Wednesday and Saturday - for space reasons these are usually only shown if a different play was performed.
