The following list for productions at the Theatre Royal, Bath from 1939 to 1981 has been put together using various sources of information. It is partly based on a list of productions which together with author and some cast details was compiled by Walter Gibb, a theatre enthusiast, over a period of time some years ago. Additional information has been gleaned from the files of programmes and posters held by the theatre, from an index to these which was compiled by myself and my late husband Christopher, as well as advance publicity information plus microfilm copies of the Bath Chronicle and its predecessors. Author and cast details have not been included as Mr. Gibb's list and the relevant programmes, where available, can readily be consulted. Where possible I have amended dates, which were not always given completely or accurately on programmes or posters, added information about performances in the theatre during the Bath Festival and given an indication where an original programme (P) or publicity materials such as posters, leaflets, flyers, cards, etc. (A) are held in the theatre's files. Where no programmes, posters or other items about a production are held by the theatre this is indicated by a -.
Running a theatre is an expensive business and TRB seems, frequently, to have closed down for a week or two often using the excuse of "staff holidays" to explain a lack of performances. It may have been that the management had been unable to book a suitable show for that week rather than financial difficulties. Often, following the annual pantomime the theatre would be dark for a week, sometimes two. Programme notes indicate that this was because of the need to recover from the pantomime, prepare the theatre for the coming season and also to take the opportunity to do a little cleaning and redecoration. Good Friday was a day when the theatre usually closed. Luckily, there seem to have been few closures as the result of the indisposition of the "star" of the show. Microfilm copies of the local newspaper have been checked to try and ascertain exactly when the theatre was closed. Normally, the main guide is the omission of the usual weekly advertisement or the inclusion of advanced details of the next production. Curiously the theatre rarely advertised Bath Festival productions although they sometimes took bookings for them. A useful Festival Diary was normally printed in the Bath Chronicle which has helped to fill in most of the gaps over the various festival periods.
In general where a date is given without any further qualification this indicates that the production in question began on a Monday and ran for the week until Saturday. Productions that began on a Tuesday or any other day are marked accordingly. Shows running for less or more than a week are given inclusive dates e.g. 9-21 May; Wednesday 5-8 May, Tue 8,10,12 May, Sun 20 May, etc.
